Genus - Helleborus

Helleborus is commonly referred to as Lenten or Christmas Rose. The genus contains over 20 species. Helleborus have flowers of 5 petals or more correctly 5 sepals. Helleborus have very unique flowers. In most flowers the petals are the brightly colored and insect attracting feature. In Hellebores the sepals (The protective covering in most flowers) are the brightly colored feature. The sepals of Helleborus can stay on for months and will turn green as the seeds ripen.

Culture - Plant in rich, moist soil with good drainage in full or part shade. Unlike most perennials, they do not need to be divided. This is one of the most carefree of perennials to grow.
