Genus - Weigela

There are 38 species in the Genus. Weigela gets it's name from the German Scientist Christian Weigel, a botanist and chemist in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Weigela are very attractive to butterflies and especially to hummingbirds.

Culture - Grow Weigela in sun to light shade. If you have too much shade the bloom will not be as good. Most weigela bloom on old and new wood. Older plants can benefit from the removal of a few old canes in late winter. Other pruning to shape should be kept to a minimum and done soon after the flowers fade.
